Pope Benedict XVI: Remarks on the "Shoah"

http://www.conferenceofpresidents.org/media/user/documents/Remarks%20by%20Pope%20Benedict%20XVI.pdf

The above link is older news... Pope Benedict XVI's remarks to the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations... but I find it curious that Pope uses the word "Shoah" (senseless destruction) instead of Holocaust (which as a "burnt offering" infers that what happened in the 1930's and 40's was in atonement for some action on the part of the Jews). Does anyone out there know when the Papacy started using the term? Or is it only when speaking to Jews?

It would be nice if more people outside the Jewish faith started intentionally using the term.
